The SPCA and What it Does (SLJ)

The SPCA is a animal charity that focuses on rescuing neglected, abandoned, and abused animals. It is the only charity that has legal power to help animals in need with horrible owners and bring animal offenders to seek justice. They take in dogs and keep them under their wing until they can find a home with a loving owner. As soon as an animal comes in, they give them necessary treatments and checks.

The SPCA first calls the ambulance team if an animal has been abandoned, neglected or abused. They have a national rescue unit based in Wellington. Up to twelve people are able to go around New Zealand and rescue dogs in the following situations:

Floods/Fast water
Small spaces
Heights
Earthquakes
Fire

The SPCA has helped many animals find forever homes and reunite them with there original owners. As soon as the animals arrive they receive food, water, bed and shelter. They work hard to ensure that all of their animals get the best home they can possibly find. There is no time limit for an animal to get adopted that comes into the arms of the SPCA.

All animals are given a health check as soon as they reach The SPCA. It is usually  just a checkup, seeing how the animal is doing, but in some cases, they have to get special treatment  or even life saving surgery.

The SPCA is an amazing group of people. Since there are so many creatures everywhere getting abused and neglected, all those feed bags, water bills, beds and toys are going to cost. That is why The SPCA needs all the money it can get. If you donate, a dog will be granted a bed.

  1. Kia Ora Ailie, this is Shannon from the Summer Learning Journey.

You have done an outstanding job on your post. It is incredibly informative and well researched. I’m very impressed. The SPCA does a lot of hard work. There are so many animals that need help and if people don’t donate to charities like this one, they can’t afford to rescue or house as many as they find. Saving animals is a noble and necessary pursuit.

You sound very passionate about animals. Do you have any pets? If so what are their names? I have a pet cat we actually got from the SPCA. His name is Hoshi, and we got him as a kitten about a year ago. He was very sick when he was born, the runt of his litter, so without the funding people give to the SPCA, he might not have been able to receive the medical treatment he needed. Now he’s a happy go lucky kitten. He’s very clever, we even taught him to shake hands, though he has to get a treat or a belly rub for the best results.

Might I suggest given the amount of text you have included that you add some more colours to the background or a couple more pictures. Perhaps you could use some of these tips for making eye catching blog posts to enhance your post and appeal a bit more to your readers.

Altogether, you have done a stellar job, Keep up the incredible work!

    1. Hi Shannon!

Thank you for saying the kind things, I really appreciate it. I do have pets. I have 2 dogs, a cat, an axolotl, and 2 horses. My parents actually own 18 horses, I'm just counting my own. Thanks for the suggestions, I will keep them in mind.

      Bye for now!

    2. Hi Ailie,

Wow, that sounds like a lot of pets! They must keep you busy! What are their names? Do your parents have a pony farm? You must be a very good rider. Do you take your horses on treks often?

      What is an axolotl?

  2. Hello Shannon!

They definitely do! One of our dogs is a Border Collie called Shelby and the other is a Heading dog named Harvey. The cats name is Murray.

They sort-of have a horse farm, it's more of a stud, where they breed horses to make their babies race. They are mostly Thouroughbreds, the worlds fastest breed.

I am kinda good at riding, and my ponies names are Scooby and Coco. I'm chilling out on riding for a little bit so all I'm doing is mucking out yards (picking up poo), brushing and taking them on walks around our property.

An axolotl is a species of salamander, except it only lives in water. Every part of their body can regrow, even their head!

    See you!

    1. Kia Ora Ailie,

Woah, that sounds so cool! Have you been to many horse races? What colour are your horses?

My Aunty has a cat named Murray. He’s super big and ginger. They had a little dog named Vinnie as well and he was actually smaller than the cat!

I like your pony names. Is Scooby after Scooby Doo?

Axolotl sound amazing! Imagine if we could grow back parts of our bodies, that’d be so crazy. It’d be like a superpower. If you could have any superpower in the world, what would you have?

      Hei konā mai,

I have been to many horse races, and for some reason my parents let bet on a horse each time. A large amount of our horses are bay (Black mane, tale and legs with a brown body) but some are chesnut (orange) and grey (white).

Our Murray is black. Vinnie sounds so cute! Imagine being smaller than a cat!

I actually don't know, he is a leased horse (means that he is someone else's but we have him at our house) but we do have a race horse called Scooby who is named after Scooby Doo.

If I had any super power, I would read minds. It would be helpful in school because maybe the teachers are thinking of the answer >:D.

      See you!

    3. Hi Ailie!

Thank you for explaining the colours to me. I don’t know all too much about horses so I’m very appreciative for your help! What is your favourite coloured horse?

What’s the coolest named horse you have? I think the coolest name I’ve ever given an animal was a fish I had called Sir Edmund Gillary. It’s the name I’m most proud of!

Reading minds would be super helpful. You’d be able to answer any question in the world. What other things do you think mind reading would help you do?

If I had a superpower, I think mine would be to manipulate water. I just think that would be so cool, a bit like Katara in ‘Avatar the Last Airbender’. Imagine being able to stop the rain mid drop or build a snowman super quick like Queen Elsa. It’d be awesome!

      Happy blogging,
      Shannon
